Programming Internship
The goal at XR Games is to be the best developer of VR titles in the world.
Founded in 2017, XR Games is a multi award-winning virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) game development studio with over 100 members of staff. We make games that provide 3D virtual experiences for players to navigate, explore, and have fun in.
We work closely with Sony Pictures to bring movie licences to life in VR as well as working with the world’s largest publishers and hardware manufacturers such as Meta, PlayStation, Microsoft, and more!
Following the success and critical acclaim of projects such as Zombieland: Headshot Fever, we are now working on multiple high-profile projects with recognisable IP’s & licences as we continue to grow and invest in our future.
The Role
The Intern Programmer is an entry-level role within the programming team. It is intended for those with no experience who are taking their first steps into the industry as an intern. Over the course of your internship, you’ll not only have the opportunity to learn from all that we have to offer, but we hope will make a meaningful impact on the production of some incredibly exciting VR titles. Therefore their role will be broad, covering a number of different aspects of games programming to support the rest of the team.
Your Accountabilities
-
Programming - As an intern you will have the opportunity to work on various aspects of game programming, including gameplay mechanics, user interfaces, artificial intelligence, physics, audio, and more. This allows you to gain a broad understanding of different areas of game development and refine your skills as a generalist programmer.
-
Bug Fixing - As part of the programming team, you will be responsible for identifying and fixing bugs in the game. This involves debugging code, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with the quality assurance team to resolve reported issues efficiently and effectively.
-
Testing Features - You will be involved in testing and validating game features and functionalities. This includes conducting various testing methods, such as unit testing, integration testing, and gameplay testing, to ensure that the implemented features work as intended and meet the desired quality standards.
-
Documentation - Maintaining proper documentation and organising code is crucial for effective collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team. You will be responsible for documenting your work, including code comments, technical specifications, and user manuals, to ensure clear understanding and maintainability of the codebase.
Are you the right person?
Our internships are designed to be placements for those who are still studying. This means that they are ideal for those who want to take a year out in between years at university or those who have just completed a college course.
While we don’t expect you to have any professional experience we are expecting you to have experience creating video games within a games engine like Unity or Unreal. You will have good C# or C++ coding skills with a good understanding of programming principles. We expect to be able to see a portfolio of work that can show your skills in this area. Additionally you should be someone who demonstrates a passion for video games and game development.
Our Values - Creative / Reliable / Problem Solver / Collaborative / Positive / Authentic
Our culture values are the DNA of what makes a good XR Games Employee. Throughout the interview process our team will be seeking evidence of these values in your personality, behaviour & experiences and will be taken into account alongside your work experience, skills and knowledge when it comes to hiring decisions.

Have you made it this far?

Here’s the thing, though — research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don’t check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself.
We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger — and the stronger our team, the closer we are to developing the best VR games possible.
