Game Director

The goal at XR Games is to be the best developer of VR titles in the world.

We are a multi award-winning game development studio that specialises in immersive VR games. The studio has a history of full-scale development from concept through to submission, working with prestigious partners such as Sony Pictures VR, Meta, and Rovio Entertainment.

Since 2020 our team has grown from 20 full-time members to almost 100 by the close of 2022, due to the success and critical acclaim of our previous projects such as Zombieland: Headshot Fever and The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure.

Throughout 2023 & 2024 our team will be working on multiple major projects with recognisable IPs and licences as we continue to grow and invest in our future.

We are now hiring a Game Director who can provide the leadership we need for our next big project. You'll work with the leadership team to develop an outstanding game that achieves high quality, is commercially successful, and is also reflective of the values we stand for. We’re looking for someone who has broad knowledge of the major facets of game development, is exceptional at making creative and informed decisions, and has a strong track record of leading and nurturing development teams.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Help define the overall vision for our next project, making key decisions regarding development priorities, creative direction, audience targets and content.

  • Collaborate with discipline heads to set goals, define scope, and maintain oversight of the budget and resources available.

  • Build and lead a team, providing support, creative clarity, and maintain strong communication throughout this team.

  • Encourage team-work, empower others to make decisions, support independent creativity, and promote the highest standards of games development.

  • Liaise with external partners and clients, and represent the project and studio in the public domain.

  • Ship an excellent VR game.

Knowledge & Skills

You have:

  • Significant experience leading multiple, successful projects over your career.

  • Strong leadership and organisational skills, including the ability to make informed decisions in the pursuit of maximising product value.

  • Skills in creative collaboration, problem solving, negotiation, and the ability to resolve issues constructively.

  • An understanding of game creation and production methodologies, including a critical eye for detail.

  • Strong skills when communicating with both individuals and large groups, with excellent writing and oral skills.

  • The desire and ability to champion our studio culture and values, and promote the well-being of the company as a whole.

  • A lifelong love and knowledge of video games across your favourite platforms.

Our studio is based in Leeds and for this role to be successful, it will most likely require the person to have a regular presence in the studio every week. Hybrid working is standard, and we will assist financially with relocation for those looking to do so, but fully remote working is not possible for this role.

As well as a competitive salary our package includes:

  • 25 days holiday

  • +1 extra birthday holiday

  • Access to Currys Techscheme

  • Access to a private healthcare plan

  • Total 8% shared contribution pension

Have you made it this far?

If you’re still reading, we think there’s a strong chance you might be our kind of person.

Here’s the thing, though — research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don’t check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself.

We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger — and the stronger our team, the closer we are to developing the best VR games possible.
