Game Design Internship

The goal at XR Games is to be the best developer of VR titles in the world.

Founded in 2017, XR Games is a multi award-winning virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) game development studio with over 100 members of staff. We make games that provide 3D virtual experiences for players to navigate, explore, and have fun in.

We work closely with Sony Pictures to bring movie licences to life in VR as well as working with the world’s largest publishers and hardware manufacturers such as Meta, PlayStation, Microsoft, and more!

Following the success and critical acclaim of projects such as Zombieland: Headshot Fever, we are now working on multiple high-profile projects with recognisable IP’s & licences as we continue to grow and invest in our future.

The Role

The Intern Game Designer is the entry-level role within the game design team. It is intended for those with no experience or those on an internship to take their first steps into video games design. Therefore their role will be broad, covering a number of different aspects of games design to support the senior designers in creating compelling, engaging, and fun game experiences for players, while also contributing your own ideas and creativity to the design process.

Your Accountabilities

  • Develop Systems, Mechanics & Levels - Your main responsibility is to support the senior designers in the development and refinement of game systems, mechanics, and levels. This includes actively participating in brainstorming and design sessions, providing feedback and suggestions, and contributing to the overall creative process.

  • Playtesting - You will also be responsible for playtesting and providing feedback on content in active development. This means that you will need to have a deep understanding of the game's mechanics, rules, and objectives, and be able to provide constructive feedback on how they can be improved.

  • Referencing - You will be gathering reference materials and conducting research to help inform the design process. This includes staying up-to-date with industry trends and innovations, as well as researching relevant historical or cultural elements that may be relevant to the game's setting or narrative.

  • Design Documentation - You will also be responsible for maintaining and updating design documentation. This includes creating and managing design documents, spreadsheets, and other relevant materials that help to communicate the game's design and mechanics to the development team.

Are you the right person?

Our internships are designed to be placements for those who are still studying. This means that they are ideal for those who want to take a year out in between years at university or those who have just completed a college course.

While we don’t expect you to have any professional experience we are expecting you to have a portfolio showcasing your games design creations, these could be from academic work, game jams or just personal projects. You should have a basic grasp of game engines such as Unity & Unreal and you should be able to show your understanding of the game development process. Additionally you should be someone who demonstrates a passion for video games and game development.

Our Values - Creative / Reliable / Problem Solver / Collaborative / Positive / Authentic

Our culture values are the DNA of what makes a good XR Games Employee. Throughout the interview process our team will be seeking evidence of these values in your personality, behaviour & experiences and will be taken into account alongside your work experience, skills and knowledge when it comes to hiring decisions.

Have you made it this far?

Here’s the thing, though — research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don’t check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself.

We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger — and the stronger our team, the closer we are to developing the best VR games possible.
